M270A1 MLRS
M270A1 MLRS developed by the US Company Lockheed Martin |
Description M270A1 MLRS :
The M270A1 MLRS developed by the US Company Lockheed Martin is a highly
mobile and responsive multiple rocket launch system with minimal collateral
damage. The M270A1 MLRS is a combat proven, mechanized artillery weapon system
that provides the combat commander with highly lethal, all-weather, precise
rocket and missile fires that defeat point and area targets in both
urban/complex and open terrain. The M270A1 MLRS provides all-time, all-weather,
lethal, close- and long-range precision rocket and missile fire support for
Joint forces, early-entry expeditionary forces, contingency forces, and Modular
Fire Brigades supporting Brigade Combat Teams. The M270A1 is in service with
the US Army, Marine Corps.
Armament M270A1
MLRS :
The Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) is capable of producing
precise, destructive and shaping fires against a variety of target sets. The
M270A1 can fire different types of rockets (12 rockets or two missiles) including
the extended-range (ER) rocket, the reduced-range practice rocket (RRPR).
-The M270A fires the long-range Lockheed Martin, Army Tactical Missile
System (ATACMS). The Army TACMS Block IA missile can reach beyond 300
kilometers.
The ATACMS (Army TACtical Missile System) is a US short-range ballistic
missile system, and is the only weapon of this type still operational in the US
military. This weapon complements the US military's rocket artillery systems,
effectively closing the gap between artillery systems used by ground forces,
and the aircraft and cruise missiles used by air and naval forces.
Missile launch weight : 1670 kg.
Warhead weight : 160-560 kg.
Range of fire : 130-300 km.

Dual-Purpose : The Unitary variant with a single 200-pound-class
high-explosive charge to service point targets with low collateral damage, (a
standard 227 mm HE-FRAG rocket is 3.96 m long and weights 307 kg. It has a 120
kg warhead). And conventional Munitions (DPICM), designed to service area
targets.
-The reduced-range practice rocket (RRPR) with a range of 8 km to 15.
-The missile AT2, which dispenses 28 antitank mines, and the missile anti-tank
submunitions at a range of 60-100 km.
